Creating Safety and Belonging with Vagus Nerve
Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, explains how our nervous system automatically responds to safety and danger in our environment. Think of it as your body’s built-in security system that’s always running in the background.
The Three States:
- Social Engagement (Safe & Connected) – When you feel safe, your nervous system allows you to connect with others, think clearly, and feel calm. This is when you’re at your best for learning and relationships.
- Fight or Flight (Mobilized) – When your body senses danger, it prepares you to either fight the threat or run away. You might feel anxious, restless, angry, or have trouble concentrating.
- Shutdown (Immobilized) – When the threat feels too overwhelming, your system essentially “shuts down” to protect you. You might feel numb, disconnected, exhausted, or have trouble thinking clearly.
Why This Matters:
Understanding these states helps you recognize what’s happening in your body and why you might feel certain ways. When you notice you’re in fight/flight or shutdown, you can use specific techniques to help guide your nervous system back to a state of safety and connection.
Remember: These responses are automatic and normal – they’re your nervous system trying to protect you. There’s nothing wrong with you when you experience them.
